How to Grow Your Network with Purpose

As the world continues to evolve, so does the way we approach business. We’ve all tried cold calling, emailing, and connecting on LinkedIn, but the most impactful way to grow your business is by getting out there and meeting people in the “wild.”

In cities like Charlotte, NC, or other rapidly growing areas, this can be a bit overwhelming. With so many networking groups and events to choose from, it’s hard to know what’s effective, what’s not, and what’s simply a waste of time. After navigating nearly every networking group in Charlotte, I’ve put together a list of 10 strategies that have helped me build meaningful connections, ones that actually lead to growth, not just surface, level exchanges.

  1. Follow up – Send that initial “nice to meet you” message, but don’t stop there. Check in every month or so to stay on their radar as they continue to grow and expand their network.
  2. Be consistent – Stick with the same groups and build relationships with their leaders. If the opportunity arises, take on a leadership role yourself—it’s a great way to deepen your connections.
  3. Find the influencers – Look for the people everyone gravitates toward. Learn from them, ask questions, and invite them for coffee. Figure out what makes them stand out and see what you can apply to your own approach.
  4. Be passionate about your work – If you’re dedicating time to networking for your career, make sure your career is something you’re genuinely excited to talk about. Identify what you love about it and let that enthusiasm shine through.
  5. Meet as many people as possible – Connect with others, find common ground, and move on when the time feels right. If a connection seems promising, schedule a coffee, lunch, or virtual meeting to dive deeper later. But at the event, keep circulating and meeting new faces.
  6. Bring a friend – Networking can feel daunting, so invite a colleague or friend to join you. They can help break the ice and make the experience more comfortable while still allowing you to meet new people.
  7. Keep it professional – It’s fine to chat about shared interests like sports, local hotspots, or unique hobbies, but steer clear of topics that are too personal or controversial. If it’s not something you’d discuss with your grandma, it’s probably best left unsaid at a networking event.
  8. Build a strong LinkedIn presence – Share your activities and involvement so others can see what you’re up to. When you do this consistently, people will often recognize you before you even walk into an event.
  9. Listen to yourself – Some days, you just won’t have the energy to network, and that’s okay. If you’re not feeling refreshed and ready, you’re unlikely to make meaningful connections. It’s better to skip an event occasionally than to show up half-heartedly.
  10. Be yourself – Authenticity is key. At the end of the day, people want to do business with those they genuinely like, so let your true self shine.

If you can embrace these strategies, you’ll soon find yourself becoming one of those influencers others seek out to grow their networks. Above all, stay open-minded and be kind to everyone you meet along the way. Those qualities will take you further than you might imagine.
